Byron Castillo was chosen as the most outstanding back of the Ecuadorian football championship and was included in the ideal LigaPro team in 2020. Despite this, the player from Barcelona SC was not taken into account for the last microcycle of the national team.
An investigation of Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) revealed in early 2019 found alleged irregularities in the athlete’s documentation, referring to their nationality.
Castillo was part of the youth teams in Ecuador, in South American Under 17 2015 when doubts began about his documentation. In the same year Emelec separated the footballer for that inconvenience.
After the FEF suspended Castillo in early 2019, the lawyer Jose Massú filed a protection action in favor of the player for a “violation of his constitutional rights” and made him be qualified as Ecuadorian.
Gabriel Wainer, the technical secretary of the FEF, assured in an interview with Radio Huancavilca de Guayaquil that the party will not be taken into account while there is a legal issue with his alleged nationality, as this could harms those selected for a possible misalignment.
“We know that – from the point of view of the Federation – there was a problem in his nationality. When in doubt, Beyond the player being watched, I know there is a problem in court which is not yet completely clear, “Wainer said.
Castillo was not included in the microcycle that DT Gustavo Alfaro with 24 national footballers, between 23 and 24 February 2021. The technical director noted the possible convocation for the elimination matches against Venezuela and Chile, which will be played in March.
