Setting the default music apps in iOS 14.5 is not something after all

What seemed to be one of the most interesting features of iOS 14.5 turns out to work a little differently than it initially seemed.

Last month, Redditors found that iOS 14.5 beta introduced a new menu when a user asked Siri to play music. This menu offered alternative applications for playing music, including Spotify, rather than transferring to Apple Music. In some cases, Siri would play music in the same non-Apple Music app the next time you asked, though not every time.

Like Gizmodo reported at the time, Siri sometimes played the song on Spotify, for example, if asked, but sometimes in Apple Music. Sometimes Siri would display the same menu again to select an application. It looks like this could be a new, if buggy, feature for selecting another default music app, as Apple recently allowed users to change them by default browser and email applications in iOS 14. But now, it seems that is not the case.

TechCrunch reported On Thursday, Apple clarified that the new menu is actually a Siri feature to teach you habits and improve your experience over time. Citing Apple, TechCrunch reported that the app you select does not become your new default, as suspected, which explains why the same menu continued to appear occasionally during testing even after an application was selected that did not is Apple Music.

The feature is a feature of Siri’s learning of your listening preferences and also explains why podcasts have appeared in this menu. Since there was no option in the menu settings to set an alternative default music app, as there is for browsers and email clients, it makes sense that the new menu focuses more on understanding your listening habits.

Apple has confirmed the functionality of the Siri function. Spotify didn’t come back immediately a request for comment.

Interestingly, the menu that appeared in the original iOS 14.5 public beta he seemed to be gone in public beta 2 before returning to public beta 3. Again, however, there is no option to officially change the music app in settings, so while it may sometimes save non-Apple Music listeners, it’s not a solution. safe to avoid the Apple music service application if you use Siri commands to play songs.

Sorry, Spotify users. Looks like we’re still stuck with Apple Music for now.

Apple confirmation has been added.
