Selectos buys $ 10 million a year in chicken from a local company

Through its Cultivando Oportunidades program, the chain bought more than $ 67 million in 2020 from various national productive sectors, such as agriculture, poultry, animal husbandry and seafood, among others.

Last year, the Super Selectos supermarket chain bought $ 10 million in products such as chicken and Creole chicken from local company Carnes de El Salvador.

Calleja Group Vice President Carlos Calleja paid a visit to the company, which supplies both fresh and frozen chicken to the 103 supermarket branches, under the name Selectos Fresh, a private brand of Super Selectos in the perishable category.

The business relationship began in June 2014, to supply fresh chicken, which is sold in 100% of the chain.

Initially this company supplied Super Selectos with 7 products, all fresh, but now this number has increased to 18 in total, between fresh and frozen chicken, Creole and seasonal (wide breasted chicken) for the Christmas season.

In 2015, $ 3.8 million was purchased from this supplier, but last year’s purchases increased to $ 10 million, with a sustained double-digit increase in recent years, which is expected to continue in the same way. in 2021. This places the company as number 3 in the national ranking of its category, thus having 30% of the market share, according to data from Selectos.

“We see an example of innovation, growth, opportunities and when we started, we did not imagine everything that could be developed and now these meats have a great acceptance among Selectos customers,” said Calleja.

Today, Carnes de El Salvador operates in controlled environments in facilities where double the number of birds is housed compared to open galleys and is taken advantage of by all factors, such as animal waste.

“Everything is regulated by software in which we manage the various stages of bird development, feeding is automatic and the water system is dripping, this generates bird health and higher production yields,” said Aristides Escobar, director of Meat of the Savior.

The company achieved an increase of over 100%, due to the guaranteed acquisition that makes them Super Selectos.

For this year, the supermarket chain has a 13% growth trend in meat purchases in El Salvador.
