SDCC 2021 Summer event in person canceled, new Comic-Con program at home unveiled

Comic-Con becomes virtual again. It was no surprise when Comic-Con International decided to move the 2020 San Diego Comic-Con into a virtual setting, canceling out all the festivities in person. As people in the United States and other parts of the world begin vaccinating for COVID-19, much remains to be done before massive meetings like Comic-Con can be held again. On Monday afternoon, it was announced that San Diego Comic-Con 2021 will take place practically, canceling the personal convention for the second consecutive year.

The announcement was made through Comic-Con’s official Twitter account on Monday afternoon. The virtual event that will take place this year will probably have a set similar to last year’s Comic-Con at Home event, although this edition will be a little shorter.

Comic-Con at home 2021 will last only three days, from July 23 to July 25. This can be disappointing for some, but it gives the chance to have every day of the festival full of interesting panels and presentations.

“While we lament the postponement of Comic-Con in person, our commitment to this fan community and the celebration of comics and related folk arts remains an important part of who we are,” the Comic-Con statement reads. “Because the timing and scope of our larger event took into account our decision to postpone, we believe that launching a smaller in-person event later may be a safer alternative.”

As revealed in the statement, there are plans for a Comic-Con in person at the end of the year. The plan is for a three-day event to take place in San Diego in November, with the entire convention returning to its normal capacity in 2022. At this time, details of the November event have not yet been revealed.
