Scientist Francisco Amaro Gahete, originally from Fuente Obejuna, prepares the best thesis on sports medicine

Francisco Amaro Gahete, a professor and researcher in the Department of Physiology at the University of Granada (UGR), managed to win the award for the best thesis in sports medicine in the world on Tuesday, compared to 16 other candidates.

The defense of his doctoral thesis was conducted in 2019. In which he collects 18 published scientific articles. The 29-year-old Spanish man was awarded by the most prestigious scientific journal in this discipline, “British Journal of Sport Medicine”. In addition to becoming the first Spanish scientist to receive this award.

Amaro has a degree in Physical Activity and Sports Science and is a medical student in year 5. He did his dissertation in English and can be translated as: ” Exercise increases the level of the anti-aging protein Klotho: health-related cardiometabolic implications . FIT-AGING randomized controlled study “.

His work focused on the study of plasma Klotho protein levels associated with fitness, cardiometabolic health and genetic metabolism. He applied his proposal to various exercise programs in sedentary middle-aged adults. His thesis states the importance of exercise to enjoy good health and delay aging, especially in adults between the ages of 40 and 65.

Klotho protein was discovered a few decades ago, but only in recent years has it been possible to understand the mechanisms responsible for “rejuvenation”. The award-winning scientist shares his passion for science with the practice of various sports, such as fitness, cycling, hiking, running, among others.
