Science magazine dedicates the cover of the Arecibo Observatory radio telescope

In the latest edition, the magazine Science, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), has dedicated its cover to the crashed radio telescope of Arecibo Observatory.

The report included in the magazine highlights the achievements of the radio telescope, which it describes as a “fallen giant” and its possible reconstruction, after its platform fell on December 1, the magazine said.

He also stressed that although it was 57 years old, the unit was a pioneer in the field of science and that its loss stunned the scientific community internationally.

After several months of damage due to structural damage to the support cables, the radio telescope collapsed. The director of the NASA space grant in Puerto Rico, Gerardo Morell, estimated that its reconstruction would cost $ 400 million.

Before its collapse, National Foundation for Sciences (NSF) decided to partially demolish the radio telescope due to structural damage. The plan focused on preserving the parts of the Observatory that were not affected.
