Satellite imagery offers another perspective on the developing situation in the Suez Canal in Egypt, where a mega container ship was turned sideways and stuck, blocking the congested passage.

Images captured on Tuesday by a Dove satellite of Planet Labs showed the blocked ship, called Ever Date, in the channel.

Ever Date is about 1,300 meters long (or almost a quarter of a mile) and 193 meters wide. The ship weighs approximately 220,000 tons and is capable of carrying up to 20,000 containers.

The satellite images collected, captured on March 23, 2021, show the container ship Ever given blocking the Suez Canal in Egypt.

Suez Port Agent GAC told Reuters that Ever Date had been partially re-floated and moved along the canal since Wednesday morning.

“The ship remains congested at this time, but its re-floating efforts continue in close cooperation with the Suez Canal Authority,” a Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement spokesman told CNBC around 11:45 AM ET. The company is the technical manager of Ever Date.

The Taiwanese ship’s operator, Evergreen Marine Corp., said in a statement that Ever Green crashed after being overtaken by strong winds as it entered the Red Sea Suez Canal. The operator noted that none of its containers had sunk.
