San Francisco 49ers rise to NFL draft, acquire number 3 from Miami Dolphins, sources say

San Francisco 49ers purchased option no. 3 in this year’s NFL draft from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for option no. 12 general and the option in the third round in 2021, as well as in the first round in 2022 and 2023 told Adam Schefter on Friday from ESPN.

The move puts the 49ers directly in the mix to create a top defender, but sources told ESPN that San Francisco is keeping Jimmy Garoppolo and has no plans to change him.

The 49ers opted for trading because they are good with the options that will be there in the 3rd place after the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets elections, sources told ESPN.

Choice no. 3 was acquired by Miami in the deal that sent Laremy Tunsil to the Houston Texans. Following this agreement, the Dolphins have now obtained Noah Igbinoghene, Solomon Kindley, selections no. 12, no. 36 and no. 102 in 2021, as well as the selections from the first round in 2022 and 2023.

Miami now has options at 12, 18, 36, 50, 81, 102 in the first three rounds of this year’s draft. The choice in the third round from the 49ers to the Dolphins is a compensatory choice for hiring Robert Saleh.

ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe contributed to this report.
