SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County will open vaccinations for new groups starting Saturday.
According to the county, education and childcare workers, emergency services workers and those working in agriculture and food will be eligible for the vaccine starting this weekend.
The announcement moves the county to phase 1B of the vaccination effort.
“We will open vaccines to about half a million San Diegans,” Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Wednesday. “There will be no half a million meetings available on Saturday or Sunday or Monday or for several weeks,” Fletcher warned.
The county has decided to open vaccine schedules after the elderly failed to use the first doses, Fletcher said.
Fletcher said vaccinations will be shared between agencies to help manage photos between the newly announced groups:
- Vaccinations for K-12 educators will be administered by the San Diego County Board of Education. All others eligible in this group will go to the county’s vaccination site to schedule a meeting.
- Vaccinations for emergency workers will also be managed through the county’s website. Scripps Health will provide support for law enforcement vaccination.
- Vaccinations for those in the food and agricultural categories will be managed through the county’s website. CAL FIRE will help vaccinate agricultural workers on the spot.
Fletcher added that so far more than 783,000 vaccines have been administered in San Diego County. Of these, almost 68% of the elderly were vaccinated. About 7.3% of San Diegans were completely vaccinated.
“We get vaccines in our arms at a very impressive rate,” Fletcher said.
San Diego County began receiving some of the nearly 80,000 doses of storm-delayed vaccine on Tuesday night, allowing the county to reschedule all missed secondary doses and resume appointments for the first dose.
