Samsung released a short teaser this morning about the next generation Exynos SoC. Named “Exynos is back”, Samsung reveals that there will be a suitable announcement for the new SoC on January 12, which will fall on the first full day of CES.
Being that this is a teaser, any details are non-existent. But it is worth noting that Samsung promises “A new Exynos is coming.” Which, we hope, is a sign that Samsung has spent the last few years working to improve its future designs.
Although the latest state-of-the-art Exynos models (for example, the Exynos 990) were decent, they were overshadowed by rival Qualcomm designs – not to mention Apple’s own parts on the market. The last few iterations of the chip have used Samsung’s own internal design of the processor, which has never worked as well as Samsung hoped, both in terms of overall performance and in keeping ahead of its own Arm-licensed projects.
Accordingly, Samsung has previously confirmed that they will use (back to) Arm cores in future projects, especially Cortex-X1, Arm’s great effort to double the overall performance of the processor. So, it’s pretty much guaranteed that the Cortex-X1 will appear in Samsung’s latest generation SoC – especially if they want to compete with the next-generation Snapdragon equipped with Qualcomm X1.
In any case, we will have more on this topic in a few weeks, when Samsung announces. So stay tuned.
