PHILADELPHIA – Sam Fuld’s post-game career seemed to be on an upward trajectory when he joined the Phillies in 2017. On Tuesday he took another step forward.

Phillies has announced that Fuld will be their next CEO. Fuld, 39, will work under baseball operations president Dave Dombrowski, who will be the main force and final decision maker in Philadelphia’s baseball operations department. But the promotion of Fuld as Dombrowski’s senior lieutenant confirms his rising star status in the minds of senior Phillies officials.

Fuld spent parts of eight seasons with the Rays, Cubs, A and Twins as a player from 2007-15. He joined the Phillies as an information coordinator for Major League players two years later, essentially integrating analysis into game planning, while being a field instructor for former manager Gabe Kapler. Fuld became the Phillies director for integrative baseball performance in January; the department focuses on sports science.

Fuld has been a hot commodity in the labor market for the past few seasons. He was a finalist for the recent Red Sox leadership vacancy, which reverted to Alex Cora, and the Stanford graduate previously interviewed or turned down other opportunities for leadership vacancies. Fuld’s resume as a former analyst made him attractive to baseball offices.

Phillies also promoted Jorge Velandia as assistant general manager and Terry Ryan as GM’s special assistant. Velandia has played various roles in the front office over the past decade. Ryan has long been the former general manager of the twins, having served as a special mission researcher for the Phillies since November 2016.
