Sakurai addresses a large volume of sword fighters in Smash (again), reminds fans that this is not his calling

Later today, Super Smash Bros. last director Masahiro Sakurai will present the new DLC fighters. This time, it’s Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and happens to be another set of sword users.

At the beginning of this show, Sakurai appeared in the last episode of Washa Live and had the opportunity to remind everyone that the decision to add sword fighters does not depend on him. Here’s what he had to say, thanks to a translation of Nintendo Everything:

“Sword fighters …? Hey, that’s what it is! … Like it or not, it’s not up to me if another sword fighter comes into play.”

“Even if it’s another sword fighter, it will be fine as long as we balance them correctly …. And in contrast [to fighters like Steve] sword fighters are light [to implement]. “

Who’s calling then? Sakurai explained this in February last year, explaining how his own “preferences” do not play a role in the fighter selection process and noting how Nintendo had a “bigger” say in making decisions:

“My preferences do not play a role in which new fighters are added; Nintendo has a bigger say in that decision and brings its thoughts to the table … The fighters we include in Smash Bros. they tend to come from series that have stories. E.g, Dragon Quest“Hero”, “Banjo & Kazooie” and Fatal FuryTerry Bogard first appeared about 20-30 years ago – I want to include a fairly wide range of characters. “

In his last discussion about the fighter selection process, he also warned everyone that he might have problems because he said too much:

“I’m sure if I go a little further, I’ll get something from Nintendo …”

The next Smash Bros. presentation will take place again today (14:00 GMT / 15:00 CET / 6am PT / 9am ET). It will take “about 35 minutes” and will show an in-depth look at the new double fighter in one. Nintendo unveiled version 11.0.0 of Super Smash Bros. yesterday. Ultimate will also arrive soon.
