GRANITE BAY (CBS13) – About 100 people attended a New Year’s Eve party in Granite Bay, despite a regional order staying at home, a spokesman for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Sunday.
Spokeswoman Angela Musallam said deputies on Thursday night responded to a noise complaint at a mansion in the Vista De Lago courtyard of the Los Lagos gated community near Lake Folsom. Musallam said no complaints had been issued and that the deputies had left with the refusal of the volume.
Videos circulating on social networks show that the number of people who attended the party could be much higher.
“The more such events occur, the more we have to stay closed to try to limit transmissions,” said Dr. Dean Blumberg. “These kinds of events are bad for people’s health and bad for the economy.”
Placer County is in the Greater Sacramento region, which remains under a regional home stay order due to a decline in intensive care capacity across the region as coronavirus cases continue to tick up.
The region came under control three weeks ago, as ICU capacity fell below 15%, and the order had to be in place for three weeks if that number improved. However, Saturday’s projections have prompted officials to maintain order for the time being, as an anticipated increase resulting from the holiday is expected.
Dr. Blumberg, an infectious disease specialist at UC Davis, believes the holiday’s implications could have a large-scale impact.
“If there are more than 100 people there, we know that the transmission rate is relatively high, we know that at least five or 10 of them have managed to transmit,” Blumberg said.
“People need to start making better choices. I personally would not have gone to a party with 10 people “, said Rhonda Williams, resident in Placer County.
On Monday, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg took to Twitter to criticize the party.

Zayn Silmi, the influencer of social networks in Sacramento, apologized on Monday for going to the party after being seen in online videos.
Despite the state’s order to stay home, some people choose to gather for the new year. So what kind of growth could we see in the coming weeks? CBS13 receives responses.
The state has seen an increase in cases and deaths just two weeks after Thanksgiving. Based on the projection models of the University of Washington, we could see an increase of almost 19% in cases and an increase of almost 24% in deaths by January 14.
“I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers grow three times more than they are now because people don’t want to take it seriously enough, I think,” said Joey Montero.
Placer County Public Health now advises people who went to a party or gathered on New Year’s Eve to get tested and stay home.
“It’s unfortunate because it will affect a lot of people, but it’s what it is and we can’t really change what happened,” Williams said.
Placer County Acting Health Officer Dr. Rob Oldham issued the following statement about the event:
“Public health has been made aware of this event. With this and any other gatherings that may have taken place during the holidays, we encourage participants to test themselves and stay as long as possible at home and away from others.
If a person who attended a large meeting were tested positive and considered infectious over time, tracking contacts would try to identify a list of close contacts and notification would take place. Tracking contacts is more difficult if contacts are geographically spread and may also be hampered by a desire to participate, along with a high level of community transmission. ”
