Russia threatens to detain Putin’s critic Navalny if he does not return immediately

The Russian penitentiary service has ordered opposition leader Alexei Navalny to return to Moscow by Tuesday morning or face imprisonment if he returns after the deadline, Reuters reports.

Game status: Navalny, one of Russia’s most prominent critics of President Vladimir Putin, has been in Germany since he was flown there while recovering from a poisoning attempt.

  • An investigation by the Bellingcat website found this month that Navalny was being pursued by a chemical weapons team from the Federal Security Service (FSB) in Russia before his poisoning.
  • Last week, it was revealed that Navalny had cheated on one of the FSB agents accused of putting him in detail in a phone call about how the beaten operation took place. The Kremlin has denied any involvement in the poisoning and says it has seen no evidence that Navalny has been poisoned.

Details: The Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) on Monday accused Navalny of violating the terms of a suspended prison he has been serving since 2014 for a politically motivated theft case.

  • Navalny’s lawyer said there was no way he could return to Moscow by Tuesday and accused FSIN of acting on Kremlin orders, according to Reuters.
  • Navalny has been arrested several times for his anti-government protests. The probationary period expires on December 30.
