Rumor: more interested parties in buying Square Enix

Buying Square Enix

Since early reports of Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda (which, of course, proved to be completely correct), there have been rumors of additional video game acquisitions. However, so far, none of these speculations has had any real weight.

There is, however, a new rumor on the block and it comes from a well-known source in Bloomberg, Japan. According to a recently published report, several parties are interested in releasing the Japanese publisher Square Enix. However, the report is quite easy to detail – we don’t know if this applies to Square Enix as a whole, to the Square Enix video game business or to the larger Square Enix entertainment business.

As such, we won’t jump to any conclusions yet – but this warning will not stop people from triggering some rampant online speculation. After all, Microsoft’s aforementioned $ 7.4 billion acquisition of Bethesda makes it feel like anything is possible – although buying Square Enix is supposed to be much more expensive.

Of course, it’s hard not to think about Sony’s situation right now. The PlayStation maker clearly has a close relationship with Square Enix right now, such as Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade (June), Final Fantasy XVI (TBA) and Forspoken (2022), all set as exclusive to the PS5 console. But back then, Bethesda had made deals with Sony in Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo, hadn’t it?

But again, I haven’t read much in this report yet. Massive corporations always weigh their options, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that something will actually happen. If more information starts to spread in the near future, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
