Rover’s perseverance captures the first “dust devil” | video – Science – Life

CNET, the technology and science portal, reported that not long after landing, NASA’s Perseverance Rover used a microphone to listen to the wind on Mars. Now he realized what that wind could do.

Tuesday, Godmother he shared the rover’s vision of a whirlwind of dust making its way through the Martian landscape.

The Perseverance team posted two GIFs on social media. One that looks bigger and one that shows an enlarged view.

“You can see it in the distance behind my robotic arm in this enhanced / processed view,” NASA wrote. “The dust devil moves from right to left and creates swirls of dust in his path.”

Mars is a notorious place of dust and wind, which makes it the perfect environment for whirlwinds of dust, some of which can reach towering proportions.

The point of view of the rover offers a ground perspective of the phenomenon, which can sometimes be seen from orbit. Earlier this month, NASA he shared a snapshot of a whirlwind taken by his spaceship Mars’ reconnaissance orbiter.

This may mark the first observation of the Perseverance Dust Devil, but it will not be the last. NASA’s other Mars rover, Curiosity, has seen its share of energy vortices.

Dust demons are not only fun to watch, but can also be useful for robotic explorers. NASA waited for a whirlwind to clean up the dust-laden solar panels on its fixed Insight platform.

Perseverance is just beginning its scientific mission, so we can look forward to more panoramic photos of the wild winds on Mars.
