Rotary outages are underway in Texas after level 3 energy emergency alert is issued, says ERCOT

The Texas Electrical Reliability Council (ERCOT) has issued an energy emergency alert (level 3) to the state, which means they are in the process of rotating outages to reduce demand for the electrical system.

“We urge Texans to put safety first in this time,” ERCOT said in a tweet early Monday morning.

ERCOT says traffic lights and other infrastructure could be temporarily without electricity.

ERCOT urged Texans to reduce their electricity consumption before sending the Tier 3 energy emergency alert tweet. It had warned that rotating outages would be needed to protect the electrical system.

Here’s how you can help reduce electricity consumption, according to ERCOT:

  • Set the thermostats to 68 degrees while you are at home or as low as comfortable as it is tolerable.

  • Set the ceiling fans to the winter setting, running them clockwise to draw warm air down.

  • Avoid using large appliances (eg ovens, washing machines, and dishwashers).

  • Make sure the doors and windows are properly sealed. Any light through the door indicates a penetration of cold air entering the house.

  • Turn off lights, computers, and other electronic devices whenever possible.
