The US Embassy in Santo Domingo announced that Robert W. Thomas was acting as Chargé d’Affaires at that diplomatic headquarters. This representative will remain in charge of the mission until the United States government appoints a new ambassador to the Dominican Republic.
Thomas, who was Minister-Advisor to the Embassy since 16 July 2020, He took office as Chargé d’Affaires of the aforementioned diplomatic headquarters on January 20.
The Embassy has announced that Mr Thomas will be accompanied on his mission by his husband, Mr Juan García.
In his appointment, the new Chargé d’Affaires assured that the United States will continue to work together as the Dominican Republic’s primary partner in the search for sustainable economic growth and the development of alliances between the two nations.
“The United States has a long-standing relationship with the Dominican Republic and during this transition we will build on our long history of cooperation as the Dominican Republic’s primary partner, working together for democratic governance, transparent investment and economic growth. . sustainable, ”said Thomas.
This representative, who has been on a mission to the country for six months, is a career diplomat who has served (twice) in Canada, Mexico, Ivory Coast and Mauritania.
His diplomatic service in the United States has included various positions with the Office of Consular Affairs and as Executive Secretary of the Department of State. He was also deployed by the State Department as part of the Haiti crisis response team after the 2010 earthquake.
Thomas holds a BA in Political Science and Comparative Religion from Emory & Henry College, a liberal arts college in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia.
The former ambassador, Robin Bernstein, retired on January 17 after her diplomatic work in the country ended with the inauguration of the new president of the United States, Joe Biden.
Bernstein was appointed Ambassador of the United States to the Dominican Republic by President Donald J. Trump and was sworn in on July 3, 2018.
