Riz Ahmed has revealed his new bride.
The actor, who revealed this week that he married in secret, confirmed in Wednesday’s episode of “The Tonight Show Protagonist with Jimmy Fallon” that he married the novelist Fatima Farheen Mirza.
Ahmed, 38, said he was not trying to keep his marriage a secret.
“It’s weird, isn’t it?” I think because living in an age of social networking, if you don’t want to go into the megaphone about things like that, it’s a secret – but I never know how much it’s shared, “he told Fallon. “For example, I’m in matte latte, but that never comes. I’m not a secret matcha latte drinker. ”
The two initially met “so randomly” in a cafe in New York, while preparing for his film “The Sound of Metal”, where he plays a heavy metal drummer who begins to lose his hearing.
“We both sat at the same table in a cafe where we both came to write,” he said. “We were both looking at the same laptop connection point, as a very modern way to meet, and we made a friendship and then reconnected.”
He said meeting Mirza at the time made the film much more special to him.
“Obviously, I met Fatima for the first time and I met so many people from the deaf community who became friends. And there is only something in this period around this film that changed lives, “he said.
As for what their secret wedding looked like, Ahmed said they kept things small because of the pandemic.
“Obviously, I kept him very intimate and socially distant. It was just like that, almost no one really there, “he said. “I did it in a yard, which is beautiful in many ways. And I think the nicest thing about it was that you didn’t have 500 aunts hanging around you, pinching your cheeks. No disrespect for aunts. ”
He joked, “Asian weddings are great. You’ve always made these people crawl out of wood, who I think are some kind of impostor. I just smell kebabs on the street and wander inside. ”
Ahmed initially announced his wedding in the January 11 episode of Louis Theroux’s “Grounded” podcast, saying, “This is the first time I’ve ever mentioned her in an interview. So, congratulations on this incredibly interesting piece. ”
Mirza is known for her novel “A Place for Us”.
