The Rhode Island Department of Health reported 90 additional coronavirus-related deaths on Monday.

On Friday, RIDOH reported 2,376 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic – on Monday, that number was 2,466.

The three-day adjustment represented a 4% increase in the total number of deaths in the last 11 months. The agency claims that only 9 of the deaths took place over the weekend.

The besieged agency says there was no intentional reporting, but that it was routine – even if it is the biggest correction to date.

RIDOH with an increase of 4%

“In the last three days, our total number of deaths has been 5, 1 and 3. However, the total number of confirmed deaths since the beginning of the pandemic has increased by more,” said RIDOH spokesman Joseph Wendelken. .

According to RIDOH, “Our death data are considered provisional for at least three months and are often adjusted upwards. This is because it takes time to confirm the causes of death and for us to refer to the different data sets. We usually review to refer to case data and our general death data to ensure that all COVID-19 deaths are captured.

“This often leads to the identification of COVID-19 deaths that were not initially reported to RIDOH as COVID-19 deaths. We did one of these routine revisions, which is why there was a higher-than-usual increase in today’s cumulative total of COVID-19. deaths, “they added.

“We continue to have a substantial death rate and there are simply too many infections and transmission in Rhode Island,” said Dr. Michael Fine, a former health director in Rhode Island.
