Representatives of GOP Gaetz, Jordan on board with “Free Britney” Spears push

Two influential Republican lawmakers are demanding a hearing on legal conservatives, including the property of pop megastar Britney Spears – in a major break for the #FreeBritney movement.

The substantial goods of the singer “Oops! … I Did It Again ”, who is now 39 years old, has been under her father’s control since 2008.

Representatives Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) expressed sympathy for Spears and demanded that the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerry Nadler (D-NY), host a televised investigation.

“Given the constitutional freedoms at stake and the opacity of these arrangements, it is up to our Committee to convene a hearing to examine whether Americans are being unfairly caught in the Conservatives,” Gaetz and Jordan write.

“When situations suggest that the government has been unfairly deprived of these rights, we have an obligation to monitor and explore potential remedies.”

Spears sues to remove her father’s conservative. In November, a court refused to regain control of his property, but added a co-conservator, the Bessemer Trust, to run its business jointly. The singer’s lawyer in that fight, Sam Ingham, and a lawyer representing her father did not immediately respond to The Post’s requests for comment.

The “I’m a Slave 4 U” singer’s fights with her father and the media became the subject of a public debate this year with the release of the FX / New York Times documentary “Framing Britney Spears” on Hulu.

Gaetz and Jordan, who are best known for defending former President Donald Trump, have even cited the American Civil Liberties Union.

“The ACLU is concerned that individuals are ‘deprived of virtually all their civil rights through guardianships and conservatives’ and has called for reforms to be explored to ensure that unnecessary conservatives can be stopped so that these individuals can direct their own lives.” I write to Nadler.

“Perhaps the most striking example is the case of high-performance multi-platinum artist Britney Spears. Since 2008, Mrs Spears has been on a board of judges. The facts and circumstances that gave rise to this arrangement remain in dispute, but it involves questionable legal motives and tactics by her now conservative father, Jamie Spears. ”

Gaetz and Jordan continue: “In court in August and November 2020, Ms Spears’ lawyer told the court that Ms Spears had ‘strongly opposed’ her father being conservative, that she was afraid of her father and that she would no longer perform publicly as long as this arrangement persists. Despite these pleas, Mr Spears remains the custodian of her heritage. ”

Nadler and Jordan write that, “Despite the fact that Mr. Spears claimed he wanted nothing more than to see Mrs. Spears” he doesn’t need a conservative, “his lawyer admitted in a recent documentary:” From the cases where I have been involved, I did not see a conservative who successfully concluded a conservative. ‘”

Nadler’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gaetz and Jordan proposed a broader revision of the conservatory beyond Spears’ case.

“Miss. Spears is not alone. There are countless other Americans unjustly stripped of them.
freedoms by others with reduced recourse “, they write.

“For example, Long Island resident Daniel Gross was forced against his will to become a conservative after being hospitalized with cellulite while visiting his daughter in Connecticut. In what the judge called a “terrible miscarriage of justice,” Mr. Gross was held in a Connecticut nursing home for 10 months, despite his requests for release.
