The Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (Egehid) has projected that the production of hydroelectric power and other renewable sources, such as wind and solar, will increase by 334.46 megawatts by 2024.
This projection made by the general manager of Egehid, Rafael Salazar, is based on the diversification of electricity production through 11 projects that would be developed by the entity, with an investment of over 1,083 million USD.
According to information given by Salazar on Tuesday in a meeting with the economic press, the current hydroelectric power plants generate 613.81 megawatts, but by 2024 it will reach an installed capacity of 948.27 megawatts.
Until then, Egehid had distinguished itself for hydraulic generation, but now it is trying to promote some solar and wind projects.
Works and investments
Among the projects already confirmed by Egehid, as they have passed the study phase, is the expansion of the Hatillo dam, which could be ready by June 2021 and which would have an installed capacity of 10.76 megawatts and an investment of 650,000 USD.
Solar generation
For this year, three solar generation projects would also enter the system, according to information from the general manager of Egehid.
One is “Brazo Derecho Solar”, with three megawatts of installed power and an investment of 6.6 million USD.
Salazar added that “Domingo Rodríguez Solar” and “Sabaneta Solar” would mean $ 6.6 million each and would contribute to the annual increase in installed capacity by three megawatts each.

For 2022, Egehid has two ongoing projects. “Sabana Yegua Solar” would contribute three megawatts to the electricity system and represent an investment of 6.6 million US dollars, while the “Tierra Nueva” wind farm would contribute 50 megawatts and would cost 114 million US dollars for development.
At a press lunch, Salazar reported that in 2024, the “Las Placetas” generation project will supply 191 megawatts and will have an investment of 750 million US dollars. The “Artibonito Project”, which would consist of two dams, which together would produce 52.2 megawatts of clean energy, would amount to 160 million US dollars, in addition “San José (Guayubín)” would generate eight megawatts and would involve a cost about $ 36 million.
The official also commented that the “Brazo Derecho” wind farm is also expected to be ready by 2024 with an investment of 17 million US dollars, generating 10 megawatts.
Installing a mini-plant in the Yacahueque dam is another project that would operate that year and will provide 0.70 megawatts of clean energy.
