Nestlé Prepared Foods has issued a recall of its hot pepperoni pockets regarding the potential for contamination with “foreign materials,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) said on Friday.
The company remembers the popular product because of reports that there are dishonest pieces of plastic and glass in some hot pockets.
FSIS received four reports from customers claiming to have found the materials in hot pockets, which led to the withdrawal of approximately 762,615 kilograms of items that are not ready for consumption.
So far, only one “minor injury” related to contamination has been reported, but FSIS encourages consumers who have purchased the product to be careful and avoid consumption.
“This product must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase,” FSIS wrote.
The products in question were produced between November 13, 2020 and November 16, 2020 and were shipped to retailers across the country, says FSIS.
Consumers are warned to look for hot pockets with a label that reads “Nestlé HOT POCKETS BRAND SANDWICHES: PREMIUM PEPPERONI MADE WITH PIG, BREAD AND VISA LIGHT PIZZA WITH EASY CAGE”, with the best use before February 20.
FSIS has classified contaminated hot pockets as a “high risk” Class I problem and urges consumers to seek medical attention if they come in contact with the product.
Nestlé Prepared Foods, which acquired Hot Pockets in 2002, could not be reached for comment immediately.
