RD hits Venezuela back; Suspend flights to that country

The Civil Aviation Council (JAC) has ordered the suspension of all air operations between the Dominican Republic and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The provision is contained in Resolution 146-2020 of yesterday, December 15.

The document explains that the restriction will not affect emergency aircraft, cargo and mail flights, humanitarian, Medevac (air ambulance), repatriation, the United Nations, technical stops and overflights of general and commercial aviation.

The aircraft referred to above must have prior authorization from the Dominican aeronautical authorities, with the exception of those in a state of emergency and general and commercial aviation flights.

The measure will remain in force until the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela decides to lift the restriction established for the country, the resolution states.

On the 13th of this month, Venezuela decided to close its airports for all international flights, including those in the Dominican Republic; however, this does not apply to Turkey, Mexico or Bolivia.

The South American country claims that this measure is being taken as a prevention against the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

According to Efe’s dispatch, the Venezuelan airline Laser announced on the 3rd of this month that it has suspended flights between Caracas and Santo Domingo, one of the routes authorized by the oil authorities, after it was detected that on November 24 they were carrying a group of passengers who had Covid-19. Flights to the Dominican Republic are among the first routes authorized by the Venezuelan authorities, which also allowed those to Mexico, Iran and Turkey.

A few days later, they authorized those on their way to Panama and, later, those on Bolivia and Russia.
