Rayo kills the 22-year-old surfer while practicing on El Salvador beach

San Salvador. The Salvadoran surfer Katherine Diaz Hernandez she died after being struck by lightning while practicing in the waves of one of the most popular beaches in the Pacific Ocean, sports authorities confirmed on Saturday.

According to official information, on Friday afternoon, the famous 22-year-old athlete was sailing on the waves of Playa El Tuco, about 30 kilometers south of the capital, when she received the sudden electric shock. People on the beach helped her, but when they managed to save her, she showed no vital signs.

President of the Salvadoran State Sports Institute (INDES), Yamil bukele, expressed his solidarity with the young sportsman’s family and underlined his passion for sports and the tourist development of El Tunco beach.

“I am very sorry for this death and I join the grief that overwhelms the family, a hug of solidarity,” the INDES president said at the confirmation of the event.

Katherine lived and worked on the beach, one of the most famous tourist centers for its waves and gastronomy.

The young sportswoman was also a famous chef in El Tunco, where she had managed to set up her own gastronomy business.

Katherine started sailing at the age of nine and participated in various national and international competitions.
