ATLANTA (AP) – Atlanta rapper known for his hit song “Watch Me (Whip / Nae Nae)” was arrested on Monday and charged with the shooting death of his 34-year-old cousin, authorities said .
DeKalb County police said in a statement on Twitter that the 23-year-old rapper whose legal name is Ricky Hawk has been arrested in that Atlanta suburb. A police statement said he was in county jail on charges of murder in connection with the January 21 death of Frederick Rooks.
The statement did not detail the circumstances of Hawk’s death or arrest.
The Atlanta Journal of the Constitution reported that Hawk was detained without bail Monday.
The newspaper previously reported that police responded to a shooting call on January 21 around 3:30 a.m. in the Panthersville community of DeKalb County. The newspaper quoted police as saying that officers found Rooks dead with multiple gunshot wounds that night.
It was not immediately known if Hawk had a lawyer who could comment for him. His manager did not immediately respond to a request for comment via email Monday night.
