Random: this unused DS Lite feature would have effectively turned the console into a switch

Nintendo DS Lite was a necessary refinement in 2006. Contributing to approximately 94 million of the DS family’s 154 million sales, this slimline variant proved to be extremely successful, but 15 years later, we did not expect to find out yet about the features unused. .

Described by the Lost Nintendo History team – which consists of “people looking to discover and restore the secrets of Nintendo software and hardware” – they have discovered that the DS Lite’s System-on-Chip (SoC) can allow players to display the screen top of the DS games, live on TV.

It was discovered last year, but only recently highlighted by Beta 64 on Twitter. If you are curious to try this directly, you can find complete instructions at Lost Nintendo History. Be warned, however, that it requires hacking DS Lite and additional hardware, so it’s not an easy task.

Why Nintendo never used this feature remains unknown, but it bears a striking resemblance to the Switch’s hybrid concept, which means it could have been planned for a long time. It’s a shame we’ll never know Nintendo’s reasons, but it’s definitely a major breakthrough.

Would you have used this feature in 2006? Tell us in the comments.
