Lenovo and NEC have just unveiled a mini-PC concept that shows how effective Nintendo’s approach has been with Switch.
Part of the LaVie range – which is a partnership between the two companies – LaVie Mini is a small laptop with an 8-inch touch screen, 1920 x 1200 pixels and an 11th generation Intel processor with Xe graphics.
Judging by the images presented, this system – if it ever came on the market – will not offer the most comfortable typing experience, but the goal here is to claim that the Holy Grail of consumer convergence: a laptop that also works as a gaming system portable.

Not only did Lenovo and NEC present this system with removable controllers that screw on the sides of the main unit, but they also featured a docking station that can output a 4K signal to the TV or monitor. However, like many of these concepts, there is an obstacle; even without the controllers attached to the LaVie Mini, it tilts the scale to £ 1.28. The switch, with the Joy-Con device attached, weighs 0.88 pounds.
Given that many other such attempts have failed or failed the concept stage, it remains to be seen whether the LaVie Mini will become a solid reality. Whatever happens, it’s still a claim to Nintendo’s unique approach to the latest gaming system. If you can’t beat them, join them.
