Rams quarterback Jared Goff and John Wolford should have an open competition for next season if they both remain on the roster, according to Ian Rapoport, of the NFL Network.
Goff, 26, has been the Rams’ starting quarterback for the past four years and led the team to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2018 season. Wolford, 25, has been with the Rams as a backup since the signing in April 2019.
Wolford made his first start in Week 17’s Los Angeles victory over the Cardinals on January 9, while Goff was recovering from a thumb surgery. He was also named a holder in the wild-card round, but came out early due to a neck injury.
In his victory in week 17, Wolford recorded 231 passing yards and 56 rushing yards with a single interception.
Rams would have “liked what they saw” in Wolford while playing and they liked what he showed in the camp for Rapoport.
As for a potential trade with Goff, GM Les Snead, from Rams, has left his options open.
“What I can say is that Jared Goff is a Ram right now,” Snead said Tuesday. “It is too early to speculate about the future. It’s a beautiful mystery. “
Goff has a total of 45 wins, including three playoff victories in his last four Rams seasons. He is the second highest in the NFL behind Tom Brady (55). He is under contract until 2024.
