PS5 PlayStation 5 Sony 1

Sony said it will unlock access to the PlayStation 5’s M.2 slot later this summer, as it allows gamers to upgrade the console’s storage space with an additional NVMe SSD. But what if you try to install one right now? According to Digital Foundry, which tested this feature, your console will not even work boot with a lost SSD inside.

This obviously makes sense, as the system does not yet officially support this feature – but we are a little surprised by the lengths that PlayStation has taken to stop its use. For now, you’ll have to settle for an external hard drive – though it’s worth noting that you can now download the PS5 software to a USB hard drive for secure storage.

Although it is good news that you will soon be able to significantly increase the storage space of the PS5, it is worth noting that the units expected to be accepted are very expensive. Currently, the owner of the platform has not yet announced which SSDs will be compatible with the console, but we are sure that we will receive more news on this front in the near future.
