Ming Kuo helped a Covid-19 patient at Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center in Southern California as an overflowing emergency room spilled down the hall. “It’s a desperate time,” said Dr. Eric Toner, a scientist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “We’ve been warning about this for a year now.” The increase in coronavirus cases is crowding large subway hospitals with patients with Covid-19, pushing occupancy against space limits and overwhelming nurses and doctors.
