LONDON – Samsung launched three mid-range smartphones on Wednesday, hoping to attract people with less money as its competition with Apple intensifies.

The new phones are part of Samsung’s budget Galaxy A range, which has become a popular brand among Samsung customers, rejected by high prices in the company’s Galaxy S range.

Samsung aims to claim its position as the world’s top manufacturer, after Apple took over this title in the fourth quarter of 2020. Apple’s new iPhone 12 is the company’s first model to come with 5G capacity.

Samsung launches three new models: Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G and Galaxy A72. The new range is an upgrade from last year’s Galaxy A51 and A71 phones. The A52 5G is the only device of the three that supports super fast 5G internet.

Specifications and features

The South Korean electronics giant says its new phones come with a number of improvements over their predecessors, including a better screen, a camera and a longer battery life.

The Galaxy A52 has a bright 6.5-inch screen, while the Galaxy A72 has a 6.7-inch panel. Galaxy A52 5G includes a refresh rate of 120Hz, which basically means that you will be able to scroll more easily. The Galaxy A52 and the most expensive A72 models have a refresh rate of 90Hz.

Samsung says that eye fatigue is taken into account, including a feature that automatically adjusts the color temperature of the display according to how a person uses their phone. There is also a music sharing setting that allows users to sync their phone with a friend’s device to connect to a Bluetooth speaker without having to connect directly to the speaker.

All three phones contain a quad camera with a 64-megapixel main lens. Galaxy A72 has 3x optical zoom, which Samsung says will allow users to take a photo from a distance of 10 meters, which seems to have been taken just three meters away.

Another key camera feature on the new Galaxy A range is Fun Mode, which was developed in partnership with Snap. It’s a tool from the Samsung native camera app that lets you add Snapchat filters to your photos and videos.

Samsung has also offered better battery life with its new phones, promising two days of use without having to worry about charging your phones. The A52 and A52 5G come with a 4,500 mAH battery, while the A72 has a battery of more than 5,000 mAH.

Price and launch date

Samsung’s Galaxy A52 will retail for 349 euros ($ 415), while the A52 5G and A72 will restore 429 euros and 449 euros, respectively.

Samsung has not yet given an international launch date for the new phones, but said they will be launched in the US sometime in April.

“This new line represents a significant step in performance and features,” Paolo Pescatore, technical, media and telco analyst at PP Foresight, told CNBC.

“The most notable features are the impressive screen, including the high refresh rate and much longer battery life.”

Samsung’s new budget phones could tempt people who aren’t prepared to pay $ 1,000 or more for a premium Android or iPhone model.

“The launch is timely and comes at an interesting time, given the numerous smartphone launches,” Pescatore said.

“Although there is a huge excitement with the arrival of new smartphones, the competition in the middle is intense. Samsung has done a good job of packing, sought-after premium features (some on its S21 pilot device) at strong prices.”
