Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) Started talking about hiding with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-CortezAlexandria Ocasio-Cortez Ocasio-Cortez says she is the survivor of sexual assault as she talks about the Capitol’s riot. (DN.Y.) during the riot at the Capitol last month, revealing that the New York lawmaker told her, “I hope I become a mother” and “I hope I don’t die today.”
Porter said she saw Ocasio-Cortez as buildings on Capitol Hill were being evacuated ahead of pro-Trump protesters entering the Capitol itself. The California lawmaker said Ocasio-Cortez asked if she and an employee could enter Porter’s office.
Alex is unfailingly polite and very personable most of the time, and she didn’t even really talk to me. She opened doors and I was like, ‘Can I help you? Like what are you looking for? And she said, ‘I’m looking for where I’m going to hide,’ ”Porter told MSNBC on Monday.
Porter said she tried to comfort Ocasio-Cortez by saying, “Don’t worry, I’m a mom … [and] I’ve got everything we need here to live in this office for a month. “
‘She said,’ I just hope I become a mother. I hope I don’t die today, ” Porter told MSNBC.
The California legislature also noted that she and Ocasio-Cortez discussed their choice of shoes while hiding in the office in case they had to flee from violent rioters. Porter wore flats on the day of the riot, while Ocasio-Cortez wore heels.
‘I remember her saying to me,’ I knew I shouldn’t wear heels, how am I going to run? “And we went and we found a pair of sneakers for her to wear from one of my co-workers so she could run if she literally had to run for her life,” Porter said Monday.
Ocasio-Cortez shared Porter’s comments on Twitter Monday, thanking her “for holding on that day” and calling her “a great friend.”

Porter said she waited in her office for six hours during the riot and no law enforcement officers or other officials came to make sure she and her staffers were safe.
Capitol Police never declared the safety of every member, which is why we heard voices in the hall. We didn’t know what they were or if they were police officers [or] if they were intruders, so we just stayed dark, “Porter said, adding that she and others sat quietly in her office” hoping [would] just run by. ”
Porter added that Capitol Police initially did not issue instructions to lawmakers to “seek shelter,” as they first evacuated office buildings on Capitol Hill.
Ocasio-Cortez shared her experience during the Capitol riot Monday night while live on Instagram. She said she was in her office earlier in the day, before she took shelter in Porter’s office, when she heard the banging on the doors. She told viewers she was hiding in the bathroom and heard a man, who was later identified as a Capitol Police officer, shout, “Where is she?”
“I thought I was going to die,” she said. ‘You have a lot of thoughts, I think, when you’re in a situation like that. And as one of those thoughts I have is … I really felt like this is the plan for me, people can take over from here. “
