Maribel Acosta and Rafael Hidalgo tied for last place and will therefore have to go to a second round of voting. In the end, the position was won by Rafael Hidalgo.
Of the former members of the political committee, only Eduardo Selmán was not re-elected.
The electoral process for the new members of the Political Committee, in its first round, lasted more than two hours, as each member of the Central Committee present could vote for 43 candidates.
In order to be elected in the first round of voting, 33% of the votes were required. In the case of a second round, the number of candidates for the remaining positions will double.
This morning, the PLD elected Danilo Medina as president for the next four years and did the same with Charlie Mariotti Tapia, who will henceforth be its general secretary. Because they have these qualities, they are immediately members of the Political Committee.
Medina, in a short speech accepting the presidency, said that it is not based on the fact that this organization will lose power and that if Gonzalo Castillo had been elected president of the Republic, he would not have taken over this partisan position.
He also stressed that this organization needs the assistance of all and that responsibilities must be assumed for the work they will carry out in the party in the coming years. “Colleagues count on me for future electoral victories,” said the former president of the Republic.
Medina encouraged those who lost in today’s internal elections, telling them that in politics work is not lost, but accumulated.
While Charlie Mariotti said that with his victory, he won the entire Dominican Liberation Party.
