The broadcaster has now confirmed that Piers has left his co-hosting role three days a week on his breakfast show.

In a statement, a spokesman said: “Following talks with ITV, Piers Morgan has now decided it is time to leave Good Morning Britain.

“ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing to add.”

The news comes after Ofcom confirmed that it has launched an investigation into the program, after receiving over 41,000 complaints about Monday’s episode.

He said he would investigate the show in accordance with its rules of evil and crime.

Piers’ comments came after Meghan told Oprah Winfrey during her American TV interview about how there was a time when she “didn’t want to be alive.”

She continued: “I said I had to go somewhere to get help. And I said I’ve never felt this way before. I have to go somewhere. And I was told I couldn’t, because it wouldn’t be good for the institution. ā€

In the next morning’s GMB edition, Piers said, “I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she says.”

While co-host Susanna Reid shared her shock at Piers’ lack of sympathy, he continued: “I wouldn’t believe her if she read me a weather report and the fact that she launched this attack on our family. royal, I think it is contemptuous. ā€

Piers’ comments were previously condemned by the mental health charity Mind, which works with ITV on its Britain Get Talking initiative.

“We were disappointed and worried to see Piers Morgan’s comments that we do not believe Meghan’s experiences with suicidal thoughts,” the statement said.

“It is essential that when people receive support or share their mental health experiences, they are treated with dignity, respect and empathy. We are currently in talks with ITV about this. ā€

The next day, Piers left during a radio series with colleague Alex Beresford about the duchess, when the weather presenter questioned his repeated criticisms of her.
