British television personality Piers Morgan is leaving “Good Morning Britain” following comments he made about Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, ITV announced on Tuesday. Morgan was a constant critic of the couple, attracting reactions from viewers and an investigation of a media surveillance dog.
“Following talks with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided it is time to leave Good Morning Britain,” the broadcaster said in a statement. “ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing to add.”
Prince Harry and Meghan shocked millions of people on Sunday in an interview with Oprah, revealing that the relentless pressure of the British tabloids and the royal family led Meghan to think about suicide. She also said that there were discussions about “how dark” their baby’s skin color would be. The royal family has called the charges “Regarding, “but said the issues will be addressed by the family privately.
Morgan, however, appeared in Good Morning Britain on Monday, calling the comments lies Meghan. “I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she says,” he said. “I wouldn’t believe her if she read me a weather report.”
Both viewers and Morgan’s own co-hosts condemned his actions. While Morgan clarified his comments the next morning, saying he believes suicide and mental health are important issues that need to be addressed by professionals, he later left the studio after his co-star Alex Beresford called his treatment with Meghan “evil.”
“I understand you don’t like Meghan Markle. You’ve said this so clearly several times in this program,” Beresford said. “I understand you have a personal relationship with Meghan Markle or you had a relationship and she interrupted you. He has the right to interrupt you if he wants. Has he said anything about you since he interrupted you? you think he did, but you keep throwing it in the trash. ”
Morgan then stepped off the set.
Later on Tuesday, Morgan wrote on Twitter about his departure from the show. “I’m thinking of late, great manager John Ferriter tonight,” he said wrote. “He would have told me to do exactly the same thing. @GMB #TrustYourGut”
Earlier, the UK Communications Office said it would be investigating Morgan’s comments under the “rules of injury and crime” after receiving more than 40,000 complaints.
