Personalized medicine is essential for patients and health systems

Mexico City, April 21 (EFE) .- The goal of personalized medicine is to benefit the patient and use resources efficiently so that both people and health systems can take advantage of it, several experts agreed on Wednesday. a virtual forum.

“We are facing a revolution in the diagnosis and clinical classification of diseases,” said Dr. Carmen Aláez, a biologist at the National Institute of Genomic Medicine in Mexico.

At the virtual forum “Rewriting the history of health, one patient at a time”, organized by Roche México and Agencia Efe, Aláez stressed that personalized medicine, in addition to being fundamental, is an opportunity to provide greater sustainability in the health of countries. systems.

Rachelle Neumann, communications leader for Roche Mexico, stressed the importance of highlighting the importance of this issue in the voices of various experts to show a complete picture of the current impact and evolution of personalized medicine, as adopting this approach is a great opportunity to have more accurate diagnoses and treatments for the benefit of the whole society ??.

For her part, Betinna Zimmermann, a specialist at Roche Farma Internacional, mentioned that personalized medicine means offering the right patient, at the right time, the treatment that really benefits them.

He explained that there are currently tools that help the patient benefit the most, such as, for example, understanding the genomic profile of each person.

“But personalized medicine is focused on providing the best benefit to the patient and, at the same time, on using resources more efficiently,” he said.

Beyond cancer

Although the greatest development in personalized medicine was in cancer, Zimmermann noted that this approach has spread to other diseases.

“This is because it promises that the greatest benefits can be obtained, because you can attack where you see changes, where some mutations have occurred and help solve the problem,” he said.

He emphasized the relevance of using data in decision-making “collecting data that is specific to an area can answer certain questions in order to develop this data and make better decisions based on local data”.

Carlos Sorroza López, a health economics expert, explained that cancer is one of the most costly diseases today and one of the most catastrophic.

He therefore emphasized that the use of personalized medicine can have a major impact on the decisions made by clinical professionals and their costs.

“Optimizing health resources, the right treatment, at the right time, benefits from the cost of health,” he said.

He assured that giving the patient the right treatment and that it offers benefits, helps the excessive use of therapies in patients who will not benefit from the drug and this can lead to lower costs.

Finally, Kenji López Cuevas, founder of Cancer Warriors de México AC, said that personalized medicine has a positive impact on cancer patients and their families, because if they have more treatment options, there is even more hope of recovery. of health.

He indicated that this approach offers greater benefits to patients because more precise treatments are administered and cause the deterioration of health to be stopped or not to be affected as much.

Similarly, he insisted that the use of personalized medicines not only benefits the patient, but also public health systems.

“There are benefits to the patient’s health and important economic benefits for the effectiveness of the drugs, without neglecting the fact that it is a hopeful option for patients,” he concluded. EFE
