Pence announces that Space Force personnel will be called guards

“We have just returned from the Oval Office and it is my honor to announce on behalf of the President of the United States that the men and women of the United States Space Force will henceforth be known as guards,” Pence said. an event in honor of the first year of the Space Force.

The move marks another fundamental element of the Space Force, as it was designated last December, making it its newest military service and the first new service since the United States Air Force was established in 1947. The Space Force was created in part to address concerns about threats to US satellites, which are critical to military operations and commercial affairs.
The space force tweeted Friday the name announcement came “after a year-long process that resulted in hundreds of submissions and studies involving space professionals and members of the general public”.
“Guardians is a name with a long history in space operations, dating back to Air Force Space Command’s original 1983 motto of ‘Guardians of the High Frontier,'” the service continued, add that “the name Guardians connects our proud heritage and culture to the important mission we carry out 24/7, protecting the people and interests of the US and its allies.”

Pence opened his speech Friday with greetings from President Donald Trump, who referred to him as the “founder of the United States Space Force,” who has been “an enthusiast” of the service since he conceived the idea.

Trump had no other events on his schedule that contradicted this event that took place on the White House grounds, so it’s not clear why he didn’t attend, although the public schedule doesn’t include all of the president’s activities. The White House did not respond to CNN’s question as to why Trump did not participate in the event.

The vice president said the Space Force has grown stronger by the day since its inception, praising Chief of Space Operations General Jay Raymond for his work leading the service. Pence also noted that Colonel Mike Hopkins, currently aboard the International Space Station, was transferred from the Air Force to the Space Force earlier on Friday.

The term “guards” isn’t the only Space Force the vice president has revealed in recent days. Pence also announced earlier this month that the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Patrick Air Force Base in Florida will be renamed Space Force stations.

“We are making history today, with the first two installations in United States Space Force history to bear the name of this new branch of the service,” Pence said in Cape Canaveral at the time.

The two bases will now be called Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Patrick Space Force Base.
