“We have just returned from the Oval Office and it is my honor to announce on behalf of the President of the United States that the men and women of the United States Space Force will henceforth be known as guards,” Pence said. an event in honor of the first year of the Space Force.
Pence opened his speech Friday with greetings from President Donald Trump, who referred to him as the “founder of the United States Space Force,” who has been “an enthusiast” of the service since he conceived the idea.
Trump had no other events on his schedule that contradicted this event that took place on the White House grounds, so it’s not clear why he didn’t attend, although the public schedule doesn’t include all of the president’s activities. The White House did not respond to CNN’s question as to why Trump did not participate in the event.
The vice president said the Space Force has grown stronger by the day since its inception, praising Chief of Space Operations General Jay Raymond for his work leading the service. Pence also noted that Colonel Mike Hopkins, currently aboard the International Space Station, was transferred from the Air Force to the Space Force earlier on Friday.
“We are making history today, with the first two installations in United States Space Force history to bear the name of this new branch of the service,” Pence said in Cape Canaveral at the time.
The two bases will now be called Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Patrick Space Force Base.
