Pedestrian woman hit and killed by Amtrak train near Santa Barbara | Local news

A pedestrian woman was hit by an Amtrak train and killed near Santa Barbara on Friday afternoon, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses saw a person jumping from a train passage on Hollister Boulevard near Modoc Road into the train track, according to emergency radio traffic, but this could not be confirmed immediately.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, said Raquel Zick, the sheriff’s spokesman.

The incident involved a train heading north on the Amtrak Coast Starlight.

Santa Barbara County firefighters, sheriff’s deputies and an AMR ambulance responded to the scene at 1:13 p.m.

Train traffic has been halted in the area, according to Santa Barbara County Battalion Chief Daniel Bertucelli.

The victim’s name was not released pending notification by relatives.

Law enforcement continues to investigate the incident, Bertucelli said.
