(CNN) – In a shooting at a supermarket on Long Island, New York, an employee was killed and two other people injured, and investigators are looking for the shooter, police said.
The shooting took place in a Stop & Shop supermarket in the West Hempstead community, about 9 miles east of New York City’s Queens neighborhood, authorities said.
Investigators are looking for a “person of interest” who “was or could be a Stop & Shop employee,” police said.
“This is a person of interest, that person who we think is the attacker,” said Patrick Ryder, Nassau County Police Commissioner, adding that “he left the scene and was seen still carrying the gun.”
Authorities say they have no motive for the shooting.
The shooting took place in the manager’s office on the top floor of Stop & Shop, Ryder said.
Several hundred customers were in the store at the time, he said, and witnesses say the shooter had a small gun, Ryder said.
The murdered man was 49 years old, police said.
Police are investigating the area and nearby schools have been closed and have been told to secure their buildings, Nassau County spokeswoman Christine Geed said.
Further details are not immediately known.
