One dead, four injured, suspect Gregory Ulrich who has been taken into custody after a shooting at the Minnesota health clinic

A man was taken into custody Tuesday after a shooting at a Minnesota health clinic that killed one person and injured four others, according to law enforcement and hospital officials. The shooting took place at the Allina Health clinic in the city of Buffalo.

A representative from Hennepin Healthcare said the victim who was transported to the hospital died on Tuesday evening. The deceased victim has not been identified. One victim has been released from hospital and three others are in a critical but stable condition, North Memorial Health said.

Wright County Sheriff’s Sean Deringer identified the suspect as 67-year-old Gregory Paul Ulrich, a longtime Buffalo resident with a history of police contact. According to CBS Minnesota, Urlich is currently in custody in Wright County Jail. Buffalo Police Chief Pat Budke said he believes Ulrich was targeted by the facility or someone in it because in the past he was unhappy with the health care he had received.

Deringer said police received a 911 call that someone was photographing at the clinic at 10:54 a.m. and responded to what he called a “terrible-looking scene.” Helicopter footage showed shattered windows at the front of the building.

Deringer said emergency workers evacuated the injured victims and took the suspect into custody. A suspicious package was found in the corner of the building’s lobby, and Minneapolis police bombed technicians to aid the investigation.

Deringer said investigators learned that Ulrich was staying at a Super 8 motel in Buffalo. Officers searched his room and found “additional suspicious devices,” and evacuated the motel, Deringer said. He added that the department was in the process of executing additional search warrants.

Budke said investigators are working to track down the suspect’s last hours before the shooting.

“We really believe Mr. Ulrich was acting alone, so a sigh of relief may be for us in the law enforcement community and for our community as a whole, we are not looking for additional suspects,” said Deringer.

Deringer said Ulrich is “no stranger” to law enforcement, and that he has had a series of clashes with the police since 2003.

Budke got emotional at the press conference at times, describing the small community as a family.

“Our hearts break as a community,” said Budke. “This is a day that no community would want to experience.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey tweeted, “There is unspeakable depravity in doing harm to those who are working to heal us.”

Congressman Tom Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota whose district includes Buffalo, tweeted that he prays for the staff and patients at the clinic. “My staff and I are in touch with Allina’s team and we hope that this terrible situation will be resolved quickly and peacefully,” said Emmer.
