A group of gunmen entered an orphanage on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince on Monday, killing a security guard and sexually assaulting three people, including two minors, official sources said today.
A 15-year-old girl and a 27-year-old waitress were raped and a 13-year-old boy was sexually assaulted by Arielle Jeanty Villedrouin, director of the Institute for Social Assistance and Research (IBSER), the body responsible for controlling orphanages. told EFE.
The attack was carried out by about 15 armed men earlier Monday in Croix-des-Bouquets, a town 12 kilometers from Port-au-Prince.
The bandits jumped over the orphanage fence, locked the doors to prevent anyone from entering or leaving, and spent at least two hours robbing the place for money.
“The children were transferred to a safer center. The raped girl was taken to the hospital where she receives treatment. We will provide psychosocial support to the victims,” Villedrouin said.
IBSER, Unicef and the NGO Terre des Hommes are assisting the victims, Villedrouin added.
Haiti is going through a severe wave of violence by armed gangs, which dominate many neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince, amid the political crisis the country is going through.
Twelve members of a religious group, including two French nationals, were abducted on Sunday in Ganthier, about 20 kilometers from the capital.
