Ohio State University makes its popular Swift Coding and App Development certification program available to the public. By expanding access to learners everywhere, participants gain cutting-edge skills for today’s modern economy.
In addition, the university works with local businesses to provide employees with job development opportunities through the TechCred program in Ohio.
In just over a year since its launch, more than 3,000 students, faculty, staff and graduates have enrolled in the certification program, completing self-paced modules in their program and building valuable skills. This new public set of courses extends the opportunity for anyone interested in learning how to code and build apps that are ready for the App Store.
Horizon Two Labs, a Columbus-based venture studio that helps launch, develop and operate technology startups, has supported enrolling its employees in courses. Technology Director Zak Dziczkowski said the courses help build the Horizon Two’s knowledge base.
“Horizon Two Labs focuses on bringing new and great ideas to life. The ability to build and iterate quickly and efficiently on new ideas is a necessity at this early stage. We build a lot of consumer-oriented products, and Ohio State’s fast coding courses help develop our team’s front-end skills, ”he said. “Our team strives to be polyglot. This requires constant learning and training on all aspects of the business. ”
The four-course series is designed to make it easier for participants to learn how to code and develop applications with Swift – Apple’s open-source programming language. It also moves away with a range of stackable certificates and real-world skills.
“This coding and application development certification program allows anyone, regardless of previous coding experience or knowledge, to learn an applicable, tangible digital skill that will not only give them immediate skills to use and to explore, but also a basis for future learning, innovation and creativity in the digital world, ”said Cory Tressler, director of learning programs and Digital Flagship.
The self-paced curriculum allows participants to go through lessons in their syllabus, accelerate what comes easily and spend more time in the areas they want to develop. The courses are completely online, so the lessons can be accessed and completed from anywhere. The courses are built around Apple’s coding program and its development tool, Xcode, which is used by both students and professional developers to create applications for Apple platforms. Xcode is available as a free download for Mac.
Once participants complete their courses, they can take on new skills and continue to develop Apple applications with Swift certification as a complement to their Ohio state accreditation.
The TechCred program in Ohio offers employers the chance to hone their current and future employees in today’s technology-infused economy. Employers can apply for reimbursement of up to $ 2,000 when current or potential employees complete state courses in Ohio.
