OAS describes demonstrations in Congress as “vandalism”

The Organization of American States on Wednesday condemned the protests by supporters of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in that country’s congress.

“The General Secretariat of the OAS condemns and rejects the attack on the institutions perpetrated in the United States today by protesters unaware of the recent election results, ”said part of the entity’s statement.

He also deplored the violent tactics with which the protesters have expressed their disagreement with the results of the US presidential election.

“The pursuit of violence and vandalism against institutions is a serious attack against democratic functioning ”, stressed the OAS.

Likewise, he insisted that there be sufficient calm so that lawmakers can complete the corresponding electoral and institutional processes.

The Capitol, as the building that houses both houses of Congress is known, was evacuated this afternoon while supporters of the US president occupied the area surrounding the site and questioned Trump’s electoral defeat.

Police ordered staff to leave the Cannon Building and other offices flanking the Capitol after Trump asked his supporters to demonstrate against the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the Nov. 3 election, taking place here. late in a joint session of Congress.

However, after the protests intensified, Trump urged those in attendance to do so. peaceful and avoid confrontation with police officers.

“Please support the police and the Capitol police,” Trump said on Twitter more than an hour after protesters breached the security cordon. “They are really on the side of our country. Keep calm!”
