Oakland Athletics supports the bullpen, reaches agreements with Yusmeiro Petit, Sergio Romo

OAKLAND, Calif. – Reserve veteran Yusmeiro Petit has agreed to a $ 2.55 million one-year contract to stay with Oakland Athletics, waiting for a physique, his agent said.

The deal could pay the right-wing Petit up to $ 3 million based on incentives for the games launched, Agent Rafael Godoy said Sunday night.

“He is delighted to be back. It was his first choice all along,” Godoy told the AP via SMS. “The team has been in touch all winter.”

Also Sunday, Oakland signed a $ 2.25 million one-year contract with reserve veteran Sergio Romo, sources for ESPN’s Jeff Passan said. He also has to go through a physique.

The two additions for the champions at the head of AL West would provide a significant experience to the bullpen of manager Bob Melvin, who lost Liam Hendriks as a free agent of the Chicago White Sox. Petit and Romo have 13 years of experience in the major leagues, and both players are familiar with the Bay Area, which also played for the San Francisco Giants.

Petit, 36, will return for a fourth season in Oakland, after winning 2-1 with an ERA 1.66 over 26 outings and 21 innings during the short 60-game 2020 season. He is versatile, given his ability to play multiple innings.

Romo, who turns 37 on March 4, had 1-2 with an ERA of 4.05 and five saves and 23 shots in 24 appearances and 20 innings last year for Minnesota.

A’s players and catchers were due to report to the club’s spring training unit in Mesa, Arizona on Tuesday. The first training is on Wednesday. Oakland has reached the playoffs in each of the past three years – losing the AL wildcard game in 2018 and ’19, then in a four-game AL Division to rival Houston Astros last year – but has been brought under control for a quiet off-season.

Athletic was the first to report Romo’s signing pending.
