Undoubtedly, one of the biggest success stories of games in 2020, especially for Nintendo, was the relentless global domination of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. From its successful launch to the present day, the game has broken sales records and won the hearts of players without signs of slowing down.
So how does Nintendo intend to maintain this momentum? We’ve seen a lot of significant content updates in the last few months, as new features are added and seasonal changes come and go, so will these updates continue?
In an interview with Polygon, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser was asked about the future of the game. Two potential ideas have been raised – a New Leaf-style approach, in which the same annual schedule is repeated before a larger update arrives, or a Pocket Camp approach in which the game is constantly evolving. Here is what he had to say in response:
“Yes, I see two potential ways here, one that you’ve already mentioned, which was our update program coming from the developers. And it can be around the seasons, it can be around events, it can be around the features of improved game. And that will continue as we move forward.
“I think the thing about it is very unique and different Animal Crossing: New Horizons, however, is also [user-generated content], and the ability of people to really lean on user-generated content and make it available and share it with their friends. And that doesn’t happen at any rate. This is a continuous, ever-changing and evolving environment where people can visit their islands and take advantage of that UGC, bring it to their islands and share it. So, I think that’s another aspect that really strengthens our commitment to Animal Crossing over time. “
Following this response, Bowser clarifies that Nintendo “certainly sees” the kind of updates the game received in the first year in a row.
So, if you’ve been worried that New Horizons will slow down, it looks like regular seasonal updates and new additions will find their way into the game for a while. As the game quickly moves toward the title of the best-selling Switch game of all time, it’s great – and probably expected – to see the development team continue their support, even if it relies little on players who keep the game alive through sharing their experiences.
