Lame & Watch
Nintendo has blocked the videos of a modder who successfully hacked his Game & Watch handheld to allow him to play a few more titles. Two YouTube videos were made unavailable after the publisher received copyright claims for the channel in question.
That account belongs to the “Stacksmashing” modder, who bought it Game and watch Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary device in November and immediately began switching to the $ 50 portable device, experimenting to see what can be done with its rudimentary technology. Stacksmashing has managed to run several titles via ROM swaps, including the original NES edition of The legend of Zelda and, of course, the software ID Doom.
But unfortunately, Nintendo did not take much kindness in experimenting with Stacksmashing and issued copyright complaints against their videos, which were confirmed by YouTube. Stacksmashing notes on Twitter that rather than being taken over by an algorithm, their videos were isolated by a Nintendo representative. Nintendo’s claims seem targeted specific to use of in-game footage, rather than referring directly to the hardware hacking itself.
Finally, it’s another day at the office for Nintendo, which has long it was very strict when it came to any form of circumvention of its regions of games, hardware or software. So if you choose to play Game & Watch, don’t upload the results to YouTube … Or don’t play Nintendo games on YouTube? … or both? … or all three?
