Nintendo Life’s Switch Game of the Year 2020 – Feature

Game of the Year for Nintendo Life Staff 2020

As 2020 draws to a close (finally!), And the fresh face of 2021 takes a look across the horizon, it’s time to look back at the best Switch games to launch in the last 360 days.

In what has become an extremely difficult year for many people, positive aspects have been found – at least in the field of video games! A launch program that at the beginning of the year was essentially Animal Crossing and a bunch of empty spaces denies a series of the best quality games that were released in a few weeks after their surprise announcement.

But what were the best absolute games of 2020? Well, I asked you this question and tomorrow we will publish the first 50 options according to Nintendo Life readers. Today, however, we at Team Nintendo Life will share our the choice of the best Switch games of 2020. It was not easy – the short list I made was certainly not very short! – but after each nomination of our first 10 people with assigned points, we have reduced the next ten Switch games that cumulatively represent our absolute favorites from 2020.

Regarding the Switch GOTY 2020 list voted by the reader, there is still time to collect the ratings before publishing tomorrow, although remember that, as with the other lists ranked by readers, you will also be able to rate your favorites and to influence the ranking after it also goes live – maybe the perfect activity to sit on the couch on a Christmas afternoon, swollen with turkey and regret.

The one below, though? It is set in eternal stone. Let’s take a look at the top 10 Switch games of the NL staff in 2020 …

Two-point hospital (switch)Two-point hospital (switch)

Editor: SEGA / developer: Two Point Studios

Release day: February 25, 2020 (United States of America) / February 25, 2020 (Great Britain / EU)

Let’s just sneak into the top ten thanks to a very enthusiastic vote from two team members, Two Point Hospital is one of the Switch games this year we had the most fun with. It’s a great port that loses nothing in the transition to the Nintendo console and captures the crazy spirit of Bullfrog Thematic hospital. Other games made us think about the existential abyss in the style of Werner Herzog or cry while making a deeply emotional journey – Two Point Hospital gave us a very welcome photo of pure fun and comedy.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (Switch)Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (Switch)

Editor: Nintendo / developer: Koei Tecmo

Release day: November 20, 2020 (United States of America) / November 20, 2020 (Great Britain / EU)

In a year when we are both eager to flee to a kingdom full of wonder and natural beauty and also channel our helpless rage into giving the hordes of non-do-wells a battle with the Master Sword, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity he managed to hit two birds with one stone. It might get in the way of performance, but that never stopped us from enjoying this Zelda prequel / title and the mix. Dynasty fighters hack-and-slash action with the characters and the kingdom of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A satisfying and irresistible aperitif while we wait for the full sequel Breath of the Wild about which, we hope to find out more about next year.

A short trip (Switch eShop)A short trip (Switch eShop)

Editor: Whippoorwill / developer: Adam Robinson-Yu

Release day: August 18, 2020 (United States of America) / August 18, 2020 (Great Britain / EU)

A short trip offered a nice short respite from anything else of our considerable arrears. Combining the charm of a The passage of animals with the exploratory spirit of a bite Wild breath (not to mention a 32-bit nostalgia doll with its visual style), there’s a lot left to do after climbing the mountain, but developer Adam Robinson-Yu has produced a mini-masterpiece that feels good, which came at just the right time. One of the best independent games of the year or any year and fully worth the 10/10 we gave.

Super Mario Bros. 35 (Switch eShop)Super Mario Bros. 35 (Switch eShop)

Editor: Nintendo / developer: Nintendo

Release day: October 1, 2020 (United States of America) / October 1, 2020 (Great Britain / EU)

“It is Tetris 99, but with Mario. “

We imagine the ground for Super Mario Bros. 35 It was a short one, but the fact that everything is so well contradicts the complexity of the design and the thought that went into this online multiplayer takes the grandfather of platform games. For Nintendo Switch Online, Super Mario Bros. subscribers. 35 is an opportune and appropriate homage to the plumber’s legacy. The worst thing we can say is that we are disappointed that Nintendo intends to launch servers on March 31, 2021 (probably to make room for “The Legend of Zelda 35” or something). Again, maybe its fleeting nature makes us enjoy it all the more …

Just kidding. Leave her alone, Nintendo. You know it makes sense.

Times and the will of the tricks (Switch eShop)Times and the will of the tricks (Switch eShop)

Editor: iam8bit / developer: Moon Studios

Release day: September 17, 2020 (United States of America) / September 17, 2020 (Great Britain / EU)

Our hearts may belong to Nintendo, but we are passionate about video games, regardless of their platforms at home and while we loved each other Or the will of the strands on the XBox One, the chances of him succeeding his predecessor for the Switch seemed extremely unlikely. 2D Metroidvanias might be ten pennies on the Switch, but it does things on a technical level, which apparently puts it within Switch’s relatively modest specifications.

And yet he came. Moon Studios went beyond that and ran at 60 fps on the Nintendo console, and the fact that it doesn’t feel like a truncated or compromised version in the slightest testimony is the developer’s ability and desire to reach as large an audience as possible with this gorgeous game. Play it.
