As more information about Nier Replicant surfaces, an achievement by Kaine arouses controversy among social media fans.
As more information emerges around the upcoming release of Nier Replicant, the nature and formulation of an achievement became the center of controversy. The creation is called “Daredevil”, which fans speculate is revolving Nier ReplicantThe intersex character, Kaine.
While the actual requirements in the game for unlocking “Daredevil” have not been revealed, fans suspect it’s something like “What are you doing?” Unlocked achievement players looking for 2B skirt in Nier Automata. Both embodiments are formulated in an almost identical manner. “What are you doing?” the description of the achievement is given by the discovery of 2B’s secret 10 times, while the realization of “Daredevil” says: “You risked your life and limbs 10 times to discover someone’s secret”.
Twitter has exploded with reactions to this achievement, many claiming to fetishize intersex people. Of those who were offended by the achievement, many said that this could be a problem as to whether or not they would buy the game, with some suggesting that the achievement would simply be removed from the game. Others were not surprised by the inclusion, indicating “What are you doing?” realization as proof of Yoko Taro’s controversial historical choices.

While the nature of the achievement seems to be an open and closed case, many warned against criticizing the game before launch, proposing instead that Yoko Taro could have dealt with Kaine in a more tactical way than this achievement suggests. However, even among those who were not personally offended, most agreed that this was a mistake that Square Enix should correct.
With the official launch just a few days away, this controversy stands like a dark cloud hanging over a game that was otherwise celebrated with lots of fan art posts and appreciations. Among the crowds, Twitter user dragonmechanism, identifying himself as intersex, tried to shed light on exactly why the achievement was so offensive, citing Kaine as a character with whom they closely identified.
It perpetuates gross stereotypes about intersex people. If you don’t understand this, then you missed Kaine’s character’s arc point. She spends her entire game trying to prove to everyone around her that she is a woman. Including herself. This achievement is disrespectful.

As the holiday grows around Nier ReplicantThe release, with cafes open in Osaka and Tokyo, this incident is a reminder of the difficult subject of Deny franchise. While many Twitter users seem to accept that Square Enix and Taro did not intend to intentionally offend their audience, the fact remains that many have been injured and the affected group in the first place is already marginalized. The fix is relatively simple, but whether or not the realization of “Daredevil” is addressed before launch remains to be seen.
