Netflix’s marketing department is pleased to announce that the streaming service will begin at least one new movie every week in 2021. This is probably an attempt to distract from that while Warner Bros., Disney and NBC Universal, etc. they have their own streaming services (HBO Max, Disney +, Peacock), the list of non-original content from Netflix is getting thinner and thinner by the month.
So if there are no recent successful reviews, what will you get for your subscription dollar in February? The biggest achievement of the month is Malcolm and husbande (February 5), a lively film with Zendaya, recently won an Emmy for Best Actress for HBO Euphoria) and John David Washington and written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. Netflix paid $ 30 million north for the film after launching a bidding war following its (virtual) premiere at the 2020 Toronto Film Festival. Netflix hopes the small-scale story of two actors returning home from the premiere of their film to await critical notifications draws the attention of industry-renowned award-winning voters.
If you are not in the mood to look at the solipsistic navel in black and white, there is To All boys: always and forever (February 12), the third entry in the epic trilogy YA rom-com that began with All the guys I’ve loved before. Next week, Rosamund Pike and Dianne Wiest face abuse in the elderly thriller I care a lot (February 19), marking the first time anyone has ever made an elder abuse thriller.
